Welcome to the Norwalk Community School District, where our mission is simple and strong: we’re Growing Learners and Leaders. We serve nearly 3,500 students and employ over 500 dedicated staff members who work daily to help students grow into self-aware, self-directed, socially aware, strategic, and connected individuals. These qualities come directly from our Portrait of a Learner and guide not only what we teach, but how we teach it.

We have a clear district academic goal: 100% of students will achieve proficiency or show gap-closing growth as measured by districtwide or statewide assessments in literacy, math, and science. To reach this goal, our teaching staff is focused on the Norwalk Model of Instruction.  These key teaching strategies work. When they’re consistently in place, student learning improves. We’re tracking progress through classroom observations, team collaboration, and professional development that is aligned across all schools. Our educators are growing right alongside our students, and we’re already seeing positive results in the classroom.  It’s all part of our effort to ensure every child has access to a safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environment.

We’re proud of the people and programs that make Norwalk special. Our district has been home to state and national award-winning educators, coaches, administrators, and fine arts leaders. From Iowa Teachers of the Year to Hall of Fame coaches and directors, we have a tradition of excellence in academics, the arts, and activities. Our band and chorus programs consistently earn Division 1 ratings, and our alumni have gone on to become patent holders, public speakers, scientists, medical professionals, esteemed performers in dance, music, and film, as well as accomplished professional athletes. Their achievements reflect the wide range of success that begins right here in our schools.

Our community plays a big part in this success. Norwalk residents support bond issues, partner in planning efforts, and have helped the district earn international recognition for innovation and collaboration with the city. This is a great place to live, learn, and grow. We’re proud of where we’ve been, excited about where we’re going, and grateful to be on this journey together.

Respectfully,

Shawn Holloway, Superintendent
