Today, May 17, 2021, the Norwalk CSD Board of Directors discussed the district’s mask mandate and new guidance that has been released by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The Board has made a decision regarding the district’s mask approach until the board revisists this topic at the June 14 Board meeting.

The board voted in favor of requiring masks indoors and in district vehicles. The board voted to relax outdoor procedures, making masks optional for physical education, outdoor classrooms, recess, and other outdoor activities on school grounds.

Currently, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IPDH), do not align, leaving no clear path for the district. No decision will address the requests of all our district patrons. Some people will applaud today’s decision and others will not.

The NCSD Board and staff members continue to appreciate the extra grace and patience extended to our district during these extraordinary times and thank you in advance for continuing to send your child(ren) to school with a mask on for the remainder of the school year.

We are thankful for the efforts of our entire staff and the Board of Directors for their leadership and willingness to adapt and make principled and informed decisions during this pandemic.

Yours in service,

D.T. Magee, Superintendent
