Every year, our Norwalk School Board Student Representative selects the Norwalk Community School District Theme of the Year. This year’s theme WONDER – Foster Curiosity, Embrace the Unknown, was created by Henry Groos and speaks to the exploration of learning and growth, aligning closely to our District’s mission of Growing Learners and Leaders.
WONDER: Foster Curiosity, Embrace the Unknown
by Henry Groos
“Wonder is the beginning of all wisdom.” – Aristotle
- Wonder should be the awe that students feel when they learn
- When learning occurs with wonder, students are naturally curious and want to explore their learning
- Wonder should be curiosity or the desire to know something
-
- We want students to be hungry to learn more
- Learning shouldn’t be a chore, but rather an opportunity to explore new things with passion
- Foster Curiosity
- We must create an environment and culture throughout the school district that cultivates learning exploration and students’ passions
- “Curiosity is the engine of intellectual achievement. It’s what drives us to keep exploring, keep learning, keep pushing the boundaries of our understanding.” -Brian Grazer
- Embrace the Unknown
- Students grow the most when they are in the unknown and uncomfortable
- If we can teach students to embrace this now, it will create skills that will translate to the rest of their lives
- “The unfamiliar territory is the most fertile for creativity and invention.” -Michael Gelb
