Buildings and Grounds Notification
Dear Students, Parents, Workers and Staff,
RE: Radon Screening Oviatt Elementary January 18th through January 21st, 2021
The Norwalk Community School District is taking a proactive approach for the safety and health of our students, workers and staff. We are working with Midwest Indoor Air Quality, LLC, an lowa Department of Public Health credentialed company to conduct radon screening in all of our classrooms and offices at Oviatt Elementary. Their credentials can be found at www.test4radoniowa.com.
Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. It is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can be present in some buildings at greater than recommended levels. The EPA recommends all homes and schools be tested for radon gas, and schools are an area of risk for people, second only to their homes.
The initial screenings will be done January 18th through January 21st, 2021. Results and actions taken, if needed, will be available for all concerned.
Test devices are not dangerous in any way and a sample test device is available to view upon request. Some rooms will have two radon test devices and those rooms are chosen randomly as part of the quality control for the test procedure.
Copies of the EPA‘s A Citizen‘s Guide to Radon can be found online at http://www.epa.gov/radon or available upon request.
For questions about the testing procedure, please contact Richard Sleeth at 515–981–0676.
We thank you for your cooperation in helping to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for our District.
Sincerely,
Richard Sleeth
