Dear Warriors,
Yesterday the Iowa Legislature passed HF847 and sent the bill to Governor Reynolds for her approval. Governor Reynolds signed the bill early this morning, Thursday, May 20. An amendment made to the original bill removed the ability of Iowa school districts, cities, and counties to require individuals to wear masks. As our district has done throughout this pandemic, we will follow this new law. Masks will be optional in NCSD buildings and vehicles and on school grounds effective immediately. As a district, we are still encouraging anyone who has not been vaccinated to wear a mask. The majority of our students do not yet have access to the vaccine or will not be fully vaccinated. We believe this is a critical step in our fight against the virus. Additionally, it is still vitally important that any students or staff members who are feeling ill, stay home.
Thank you all for your continued support as our district responds to the latest COVID-19 pandemic mandate from the state. If you have any questions or thoughts about this legislation, I would encourage you to contact the Governor’s office or one of the five legislators who represent our district.
Emotions and responses regarding the prohibition of mask mandates will vary. Please have a conversation with your student(s) and encourage them to display an extra amount of kindness and consideration for others who may have a different opinion regarding the wearing of masks. Let’s continue to focus on our district theme for the year – ONE – One Family – One District – One Community.
Yours in service,
D.T. Magee, Superintendent
